Bout Preview: (19) Rocky Mountain @ (9) Madison

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on October 19, 2007

The big WFTDA matchup of this weekend finds the #19th ranked Rocky Mountain Roller Girls traveling to Wisconsin to get on the rink with Madison’s Mad Rollin’ Dolls, who are looking to climb back up the rankings after their early exit from Eastern Regionals dropped them from #4 to #9.

The Rocky Mountain girls have been pretty active this summer, starting with June wins against unranked Angel City and #20 Atlanta (176-119 and 91-70 respectively.) #15 Rose City knocked them off in July by a score of 111-74, but Rocky Mountain has been on a roll since then, beating Division III Fort Wayne 164-69 in August and thumping unranked No Coast 108-20 in September (and shutting them out for the entire first period!) Finally, in a special interleague battle of local teams, the RMRG Sugar Kill Gang defeated the Danger Dolls of Pikes Peak Derby Dames, 120-78.

On the flip side, Madison hasn’t seen too much interleague action this year in comparison. In June, they notched a big win by defeating the Hot Rod Honeys, one of Texas’ four home teams, 101-92. The next two months, though, saw tough times for the Mad Rollin’ Dolls — first, they lost to Tucson at home by a convincing 120-64, and then were shocked by Windy City at August’s Heartland Havoc, 94-63.

Madison will be hosting 2008’s Eastern Regional tournament next October, so it’s a pretty safe bet they’re interested in reclaiming their former title as the team to beat in the East … and will try to start on that road with a win over Rocky Mountain.

UPDATE: Rocky Mountain scores a considerable upset, sending Madison to their third loss in a row, 131-98. Gnosis from Leadjammer mentions in comments that Madison team captain Crackerjack didn’t play in this one and the Dairyland Dolls were fielding a new lineup, which may have had an effect, but still an impressive accomplishment for Rocky Mountain. Madison’s Geoffrey Saucer has a mini-recap over here on RollerDerbyIsSport.

Bout preview: (13) Bay Area @ (u) Angel City

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on October 12, 2007

New WFTDA league Angel City is wasting little time in challenging themselves against high-level competition, having done battle with 19th ranked Rocky Mountain in June and now going up against the tough B.A.D. girls. Angel City took a 173-119 loss in that matchup against Rocky Mountain, but they are certainly nothing to take lightly, bringing a couple of genuine breakout stars in Diesel and Estro Jen and a crew that seems intent on making a mark in WFTDA play quickly and dramatically.

Bay Area is something of a question mark right now, having been almost completely dormant as a travel team since Dust Devil, where they crushed Pikes Peak 198-15 right before getting karmic backlash against Rat City, who dismissed them from the tournament 112-35. The Bay Area girls did get a measure of revenge in April, when Rat City’s home team Grave Danger came down to challenge the Bay Area travel team and was sent packing, 95-75, but there’s been no other interleague play for Bay Area since then. There seems to have been a fair amount of turnover in the B.A.D. Girls interleague roster since February, but impressive tournament players that remain in the lineup include Kitt Turbo, Taxi Scab and Racey Lane.

UPDATE: Bay Area puts a serious hurting on Angel City, 126-8.

Bout Preview: (15) Rose City @ (5) Gotham

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on October 12, 2007

(updated to reflect new WFTDA rankings)

A high-level WFTDA clash goes down in the Big Apple on Saturday, as Gotham attempts to bounce back from a disappointing one-and-out performance at the Texas Shootout, while the up-and-coming Rose City comes all the way out from Portland to represent for the West Coast.

Gotham spent only a month as the undisputed rulers of the East. They shrugged off all competition in August’s Heartland Havoc, but their first-round exit at Nationals opened the door for Carolina to stake a reasonable claim to best in the East. This roster doesn’t appear to have any debuting rookies since Nationals — which means that it’s full of skaters eager to erase the memory of the first-round loss to eventual champions Kansas City — and this is also the Gotham all-star team’s first home bout in two seasons.

With the release of the new WFTDA rankings, Rose City comes into this bout as a significant underdog. They made a big statement at February’s Dust Devil by very nearly upsetting the favored Sin City girls in the first bout of the first round, losing by a razor-thin 95-92, and then got revenge by bringing down Sin City 107-80 in a rematch two months later. However, that’s the majority of Rose City’s 2007 travel team action right there — their only other match was a solid July win over 17th-ranked Rocky Mountain, 111 to 74.

UPDATE: Gotham earns their 5 ranking, controlling Rose City 129-86 (bout recap to come.)

Bout Previews: (17) Sin City @ (8) Detroit, (17) Sin City @ (24) Grand Raggidy

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on October 12, 2007

(updated to reflect new WFTDA rankings)

The hostesses of Rollercon take a jaunt out East this weekend, making the most of it by playing bouts on consecutive days against Michigan’s two WFTDA leagues, Detroit and Grand Raggidy. All three leagues will be looking to turn around some recent losing streaks. On Friday, 17th-ranked Sin City takes on 8th-ranked Detroit, and on Saturday they travel three hours down the road to battle 24th-ranked Grand Raggidy.

Detroit, of course, has had the highest profile lately, with their surprising victory over Minnesota at Heartland Havoc and subsequent trip to the national tournament shooting them 11 slots up the WFTDA rankings. However, since that win over Minnesota, they’ve had a tough time of it, with +100 point losses to Gotham and Rat City and a much closer 10 point loss to Carolina. Given the level of competition they’ve gone up against recently (they’ve played the #2, #4 and #5 teams in the nation in the last seven weeks!) they’ve no doubt learned a lot of new tricks that they’d be more than happy to try out on the Sin City girls. Detroit’s roster for this bout looks nearly identical to their Havoc/Shootout roster, with apparently only Lady MacDeath making a travel team debut — so this is a team with a lot of recent experience.

Sin City’s been suffering a bit of a cold streak recently, and it’s reflected in their two-slot drop in the rankings. Their most recent match was in late July, when friendly rival Duke City (ranked 16th) finally got the better of them in a close match, 104-84. A month previous, though, Sin City was battered 117-36 by the Windy City Rollers at home, and also lost 107-80 to Rose City in April. The Neanderdolls’ only win since Dust Devil stands as a 124-80 May victory over the considerably younger Brew City Bruisers, and team leaders Ivanna S. Pankin and Trish the Dish are doubtless keenly interested in adding more wins to their 2007 record.

Once they’re done with Detroit, it’ll be time for Grand Raggidy, who has seen the least action of the three leagues in 2007. Grand Raggidy was unfortunate enough to pull Gotham on the opening day of Heartland Havoc, and was (wo)manhandled in a tough 206-49 defeat — before that, they’d barely escaped with a June victory over a dangerous new WFTDA member in Fort Wayne, 84-82. Regional rivals Detroit defeated them in a close 105-89 bout in May, and Grand Raggidy went 1-1 at March’s East Coast Extravaganza, losing to Charm City 95-75 and taking down Ohio 167-104. GRRG will have their work cut out for them against the more experienced Sin City, but perhaps a combination of the home-field advantage, a chance to scout out Sin City the night beforehand in Detroit, and the lessons learned from Gotham will allow the Grand Rapids girls to score what would be a considerable upset.

(Thanks to Detroit’s Bella Go-Go See & Grand Raggidy’s Dot Matrix for these rosters.)

UPDATE 1: Detroit earns their top-ten ranking, knocking off Sin City 129 to 75. Dot Matrix reports that Sin City captain Ivanna S. Pankin was hurt in the second period and did not play the third, making her questionable for tonight’s bout with Grand Raggidy.

UPDATE 2: Grand Raggidy makes it a Michigan sweep, beating Sin City 115-52.

Charm City Championship Preview: Night Terrors vs. Speed Regime

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on October 12, 2007

Charm City’s second home season comes to a close on Sunday evening with what has quickly become a truly storied rivalry in the Baltimore area, as the 2006 champions, the 5-1 Night Terrors, try for a repeat title against the Speed Regime, also 5-1. In 2006, the Terrors were a classic underdog story, opening the season 1-2 and getting drubbed by 41 points against the Speed Regime in their first meeting. In the second half of the season, though, the addition of crushing blocker Mibbs Breakin’ Ribs, the maturing of star jammer Joy Collision, and the entire team’s effort to build an impressively cohesive defense paid off in the most dramatic of fashions, as the Terrors managed to stick with the Regime in their rematch and erase a 6 point deficit on the last jam of the championship bout, winning 57-55 and handing the Speed Regime their first loss ever.

The Regime and Terrors next faced each other in June of 2007, and that hotly contested rematch also came down to the last lap of the last jam, but this time with the Regime on top, 63-60, as a last-second block from Regime’s Stormin’ Mormon took down Terrors jammer Dr. Skabs before she could score the last few points the Terrors needed to win. But in the 4th meeting between the teams, the Night Terrors owned the Regime much like the Regime had owned them in their first meeting, thumping them 96-49. Over the course of four meetings, only 5 points separate the two teams.

A major factor in this bout will be whether the Speed Regime can compensate for the mid-season loss of two critical blockers in Berzerker and Buzz Kill — porous defense was a serious problem for them the last time they faced the Terrors. On the other hand, the Terrors are looking at some injury trouble: Mibbs Breakin’ Ribs may not be at 100 percent, skating on a bruised knee, fellow blocker Minerva Vavoom is nursing a shoulder injury, and the Mexican Fury is questionable for the roster with a broken finger.

Charm City Bout Preview: Junkyard Dolls vs. Mobtown Mods

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on October 12, 2007

In the third-place game of Charm City’s championship doubleheader, the 0-6 Mobtown Mods would very much like to end a rough season on an up note by getting revenge on the 2-4 Junkyard Dolls, who have already beaten them twice this year. The Mods do have a number of things working in their favor, as team captain Road Rash Rivers, who sat out the whole season during a pregnancy, returns to the hardwood to help out her team. Additionally, the Mods’ 2006 workhorse, Lady Quebeaum, returned from an ankle injury in August and has been looking more impressive with every outing. Finally, the Mods are bringing in two nimble guest skaters from nearby Harrisburg Area Roller Derby, Rainbow’s Revenge and Nash Villain, who provide a little more depth at the jammer position but are also smart and effective blockers.

The Dolls have a number of weapons of their own, though: they have 2007’s current scoring leader in rookie Cherrylicious (208 points in 6 bouts), and halfway through the season they picked up a major force in Dolly Rocket, who has helped to significantly improve the Dolls’ play at the front of the pack. Rookies Killer Kitten and Radar Love have shown dramatic improvement over the course of the season, and Dirty Trixie, previously exclusively a blocker, has been taking more turns at the jammer line, making the Dolls one of the more adaptable teams in the league.

The deciding factor in this game may be whether the Mods can keep the first half close — throughout the season, they’ve generally kept the score even in the second half but opened the bout very ragged. Key for the Dolls will be continuing their improvement at pack cohesion — they’ve always been a very hard-hitting group individually but they’ve been adding a dimension of defensive teamwork that has made life a lot harder on opposing jammers.

UPDATE: The Dolls complete the hat trick, consigning the Mods to a winless season by a score of 67-54 (full recap to come.)

Men’s bout preview: New York Shock Exchange @ Harm City Homicide

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on October 12, 2007

The halftime of Charm City’s championship bout this Sunday sees the return of a Charm City championship tradition in a men’s derby exhibition. Last year the Charm City refs, playing co-ed, squeaked past the Pioneer Valley Dirty Dozen in a 15 minute expo, but this time it’s a full 20 minutes of the visiting New York Shock Exchange vs. the Harm City Homicide (your humble journalist’s team) in their home debut. Although the Shock Exchange often plays halftime exhibitions against themselves in the NY/NJ area, both teams have just one 40 minute bout under their belts: the Shock Exchange defeated Pioneer Valley 107-50 in April (although PVRD skated 7 players against 14 for NYSE) and the Homicide lost to Pioneer Valley 100-67 in September.

This bout has the distinction of featuring more referees playing in the game than will be officiating the match (eight: Homicide’s Justice Feelgood Marshall and Virginia Slim (Charm City), Shock Exchange’s Psycho Billy and Jefferee (Long Island) and Endless Justin, Hambone, Flying Squirrel and Mr. Rawk (Gotham)). The Gotham refs will all be skating under alter-alter egos: Endless Justin as Gordon Gekko, Hambone as Snausage, Flying Squirrel as Jonathan R and Mr. Rawk as Junk Bond. Doubtless the effect of having so many refs in the game will be that neither team will commit any penalties.

UPDATE: Shock Exchange delivers a solid schooling, winning 97-14 (full recap to come).

Bout preview: (u) Northwest Arkansas @ (u) No Coast

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on October 5, 2007

This Friday night serves up a potentially revealing matchup of two of WFTDA’s newer members in Lincoln, as the No Coast travel team, the Mad Maxines, host Northwest Arkansas. Neither league is yet ranked, so the outcome of this one will likely have a significant effect on where each league debuts in the next WFTDA rankings.

No Coast has been interleague bouting for a bit longer than NWA, with bouts against Omaha, Minnesota, and (the late, lamented) Chi-Town Sirens in 2006, but the Mad Maxines were fairly quiet for the first part of 2007 before getting back into interleague action in the late summer. They opened up with two tough losses against two established leagues — 113-47 to the Denver Roller Dolls in August, and 108-20 to #17-ranked Rocky Mountain in September (bruisednews has a short recap of the Rocky Mountain bout here) — but bounced back admirably by taking down the Sac City Rollers 93-63 in an away game.

Meanwhile, NWA had their interleague debut in June of this year with a 112-77 loss to #26-ranked Assassination City, and then started a regional rivalry with nearby Tornado Alley Roller Derby at July’s Route 66 Rebellion Tournament, hosted by Green County Roller Girls. In a round-robin bout, NWA fell to Tornado Alley 51-48, but when the two faced each other again in the championship bout, NWA managed a narrow last-jam victory, 32-31. However, it seems that NWA learned a lot from their tournament experience — when they met Tornado Alley yet again just one month later in August, they skated away with a comparatively easy 154-60 win. Now they’re looking to extend that momentum with their first WFTDA win … but No Coast would like to do the same!

UPDATE: No Coast comes out ahead in what appears to have been a close one, 90-83.

Texas Shootout Bout Preview: (West #1) Rat City v. (East #4) Detroit

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on September 27, 2007

On paper, it would appear that Detroit has got the roughest assignment on the Texas Shootout’s first day. They’re matched up against the #1 ranked team in all of roller derby in Rat City — and Rat City earned that title by not only defeating both Texas and Tucson in the Dust Devil Western Regionals, but by defeating them both on the same day. Detroit had to fight tooth and nail for their own berth in the Eastern top four — while Gotham, Windy City and Carolina all punched their tickets by relatively large margins, Detroit needed overtime to squeak by Boston in the first round 104-99, and had a tough battle with Minnesota before knocking them off 99-77.

There are some factors working in Detroit’s favor, though. Like most Eastern travel teams, they’ve been much more active this year than the West teams. Rat City hasn’t played a single travel team bout since their Dust Devil victory over Tucson, while Detroit has gone up against Carolina (twice, both losses), Charm City (notching a 124-107 win in at the East Coast Extravaganza in March), Boston, Minnesota, Grand Raggidy (a 105-87 win in May) and Gotham. They also are one of the most physical teams in the East and demonstrated astonishing endurance during Heartland Havoc, which will help them out against a very strong Rat City team. Finally, they’ve got the Heartland Havoc MVP in their phenomenal jammer Racer McChaseher, who never seemed to lose a step no matter how many times she went to the second line.

Rat City, of course, brings a number of phenomenal players of their own to the first day’s last bout, notably the crushing sister act D-Bomb and Blonde An’ Bitchen (update: and Femme Fatale — thanks for the family tree, Muffin) and speed demon jammers Miss Fortune, Pia Mess and Valtron. At Dust Devil 2007, Rat City demonstrated themselves to have possibly the highest average speed in derby — while Detroit may be able to match up with them in terms of strength, the bout may come down to whether the Detroit jammers are able to put on the explosive speed required to break away from the Rat City defense. The winner of this one gets a date with the winner of Texas / Windy City at 1:30pm on Sunday.

Texas Shootout Bout Preview: (East #2) Windy City v. (West #3) Texas

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on September 26, 2007

An argument can be made that this bout features the two biggest stories in roller derby this year. First, Chicago’s Windy City Rollers vividly demonstrated that a year of training can make a huge difference — after getting crushed by Madison 42-0 in a 12-minute round-robin bout at Dust Devil 2006, they pulled off what might have been the most unexpected upset in flat-track tournament play, delivering a stunning performance against that same Madison team to defeat them 94-63 at Heartland Havoc 2007. Windy City, who came in as the number #7 seed to that tournament, also knocked off #3 seed Carolina before succumbing to the Gotham machine in the championship bout.

On the flip side of that is Texas, the original flat-track derby league, who were all but untouchable for the first three years of their existence. They suffered their very first loss ever in December of 2006 to Tucson, soon followed by a loss in the semifinals of Dust Devil 2007 to Rat City. While the Texecutioners did pick up a win in Carolina on September 15, it was a narrow 64-59 victory. If Windy City plays the same deadly effective defense they did against Carolina at Havoc, where they won 104-55, Texas might find themselves leaving their own party early. But it’s certain that the home-court advantage will be a major factor in favor of Texas. Not only will they have their entire roster available to them — the recent 12-skater roster against Carolina left off crucial Texas elements like Sedonya Face, Curvette and Dinah Mite — but the raucous audience is going to want to see their girls keep the championship in the birthplace of derby, and the girls are most assuredly interested in making that happen.

Windy City brings in a very balanced team that relies on a truly collective defensive effort, but standout players from the Eastern Regionals were the twin towers Malice in Chains and Megan Formor, who repeatedly teamed up on exceedingly effective positional blocking, and speedy jammers Kola Loka and Yvette Yourmaker. Texas brings one of the deepest, most experienced benches in all of roller derby, with Trouble, Buckshot, Derringer, Rice Rocket, Muffin Tumble and Lady X all making trouble in different ways for their opponents. The winner gets to tangle with the victor of Rat City vs. Detroit.

21 Buckshot // 23 Electra Blu // 420 Sedonya Face // 66 Barbarella // XX Cat Tastrophe // 00 Dinah Mite // 76 Curvette // 77 Dagger Deb // 51 Lady Stardust // 1889 Belle Starr // 40 Bloody Mary // X Lady X // 10 Trouble // 56 Lucille Brawl // .44 Derringer // 3e8 Rice Rocket // 00 Sparkle Plenty // 22 Slim Kickins // 28 Muffin Tumble // 41 Cheap Trixie
