Muffin: thank you for the detailed comment, I *love* it when people use a post as a jumping-off point for more conversation. You are 100% right about the jammer point differential being as important a stat as total points, and I must admit the reason I didn't include jammer point differential in this writeup was because I was hung over and didn't feel like doing the extra math. I am a bad journalist.

Six: as I've said before, anytime I am invited and don't have a schedule conflict, I am all about DC. It's been really great to have followed DCRG's progress from nearly the beginning.

"Harley Quinn led the scoring for Scare Force One with 29 points on 7 jams (4.14ppj), while teammate Meatball was just a hair behind with 28 points on 5 jams (5.6ppj)."

I think that total jammer points per jam are somewhat less interesting and informative that points per jam and especially differential. You usually note differential in your writeups for Charm City, something that I really like.

The following stats rant isn't for you, Justice, as I know that you understand these issues really well - it just struck me that the sentence I quoted above made it seem as though Harley was more effective in this game than Meatball, when in fact (without differential, I can't say for sure), Meat scored an average of one and a half more points per jam than Harley. And as I just said, even points per jam can be misleading if you don't have the stats for differential, as Meat may have averaged +3 to Harley's +4 or whatever though she had a higher PPJ.

Each jammer stat informs you of something different, really - many points over many jams can indicate consistency and stamina. A high number of points per jam with fewer jams may mean explosive capability over a more limited scope. Differential, though - that's the game-winner. A jammer with good differential usually indicates good performance in the other areas *plus* a good understanding of strategy - when to jam defensively or effective use of lead jammer. It doesn't really matter if you average 8 points per jam if the other jammer does, too (though perhaps it shows that you can keep up...).

Which jammer was more of an asset to her team? The one who scored 50 points at 5ppj but had a negative differential, or the one that was able to outscore her opponent but only scored 20 points at 2ppj? It's hard to say - but I definitely like having all of those stats to look at when examining a game, and I hope that it becomes the standard.

On that note, I think that Tucson did a super job with their stats recap pages from Dust Devil, and I hope that the Havoc and Shootout follow suit. You can view stats by team, game, and even player - and compare ppj, totals, and lead percentages across a lot of different games and teams. The one factor missing is differential, which leads to some funny stats for jammers - jamming stats for those teams who lost in blowouts are about the same to those who won some games and lost competitive games, because they are based purely on PPJ, total points, and not differential.

Once the derby world is sold on the (simple) idea of tracking jammer differential, I think Dahmernatrix will be moving on to a campaign for her *beautiful* objective blocker statistics - which reward (and track) effectiveness and teamwork objectively instead of rewarding flashy play, as most blocker stats do.
