Charm City Championship Recap: Night Terrors 89, Speed Regime 73

The second Charm City championship match ended up being very similar to the first one — once again, the Speed Regime and Night Terrors clashed for the title, once again, the first half was a back-and-forth battle that ended in a stalemate, once again, the Speed Regime started opening up a lead late in the second half, and once again, the Night Terrors turned the tables on them in dramatic fashion. Although the end didn’t come quite as suddenly for the Speed Regime this year, they once again had to content themselves with second place as the Night Terrors repeated as champions in another thrilling title match, 89-73.

The Speed Regime had gotten beaten badly by the Terrors a month ago, and when the first jam went 9-0 for the Terrors’ Joy Collision as her blocker Mibbs Breakin’ Ribs refused to let Regime jammer Flo Shizzle complete her first pass, it seemed for a moment that the Terrors might waltz again. Psycho78 erased those thoughts fairly convincingly on the second jam, though, running up a 12-4 on Marizpain as Regime blockers Cindy Lop-Her and Pistol Whip locked down Marzipain for two full laps. The Terrors would pull a bit further ahead on the next jam, when Frenzy Lohan and Joy Collision, blocking for the Terrors, held back Regime jammer Pistol Whip long enough for Rosie the Rioter to scoop up a 5-0 grand slam. That made the score Night Terrors 18, Speed Regime 12, and the teams would be in a low-scoring defensive grapple for the rest of the half. On Jam 9, Dr. Skabs was jamming for the Night Terrors and decided to take the initiative on defense with a crowd-pleasing takeout of her opposing jammer Flo Shizzle, but Skabs couldn’t find a way past Regime blocker Pistol Whip, allowing Flo to recover, get lead and go 4-1. On the next jam, Terrors jammer Pixie Rocket had trouble negotiating a defense of Cindy Lop-Her, Large Marge and Deathany, and Pistol Whip took the opportunity to get a grand-slam 5-0 over her. That gave the Speed Regime their first lead of the bout at Regime 33, Terrors 30. More small-margin jams were traded to close out the half, and when it ended on a highly defensive jam between Joy Collision and Flo Shizzle, the bout was completely knotted up at 39 points for each team.

The Speed Regime opened up the second half with a quick 5-0, as Betty Beatdown ran up a grand slam on Marizpain, helped along by Pistol Whip repeatedly taking her down. Marzipain would go to the box at the end of that jam, but the Terrors got a significant break on the following jam as Flo Shizzle, starting the jam with 3 minors, picked up a fourth minor before starting her scoring lap, quickly ending the power play before any damage was done. The Terrors would sneak 1 point closer on each of the following three jams, making the score Speed Regime 51, Night Terrors 49 with about 15 minutes to play. But the Speed Regime would put together their best set of jams of the night at that point, with Flo Shizzle going 8-6 over Rosie the Rioter and Betty Beatdown notching a 3-0 over Dr. Skabs. On Jam 8, Joy Collision gave her jammer Marzipain a crucial whip that got her past Deathany, giving her lead jammer and allowing her to pull out a 3-2 win over Psycho78. But the Regime had an answer for that, with their defense owning Terrors jammer Rosie the Rioter and allowing Flo Shizzle to get a 4-0 win, giving the Speed Regime their biggest lead of the bout at 68-58 with about 8 minutes to play.

Unfortunately for the girls in green, though, nothing would go right for them in the next three jams. First, Psycho78, jamming for the Speed Regime against Marzipain, had to spend a vital minute watching from the penalty box as Marzipain made the audience explode by outracing Regime blockers, suddenly erasing the Regime lead in two 5 point laps. That tied the score at 68-68, and both teams sent their highest-scoring jammers to the line in the following jam, with Flo Shizzle lining up for the Speed Regime against Joy Collision for the Night Terrors. It would be Joy emerging victorious from that matchup, pulling a 7-0 on Flo as Terrors blocker Mexican Fury bought Joy some space with a well-timed takeout of Flo. That made the score Night Terrors 75, Speed Regime 68 with just under 3 minutes to play, and the Terrors had all the momentum on their side. On the subsequent jam, they all but put the Speed Regime away. The size and lateral motion of Terrors blockers Joy Collision and Cheeta Torpeda was too much for Betty Beatdown’s famously wily jamming to overcome, and Terrors jammer Rosie the Rioter had a much easier path through the pack, putting up a back-breaking 14-0 jam in a full two minutes. In those three jams, the Terrors had gone on a 31-0 run, taking a dangerously growing deficit to an insurmountable lead. The bout would end on the next jam, and the Terrors would get their names on the Donaghy Cup for the second year in a row. Final score was Night Terrors 89, Speed Regime 73.

Joy Collision led all scorers with 32 points on 6 jams, while Psycho78 led the Regime with 23 points on 8 jams. Joy Collision also owned the stats for jammer point differential (+24) and lead jammer percentage (taking it on 5 out of 6 jams.) With her performance in this game, Joy sent a new CCRG record for lead jammer percentage — over the course of the season, she picked up lead on 76 percent of her jams. For the first and only time in CCRG history, a team managed to make it all the way through a bout without picking up a major — the Night Terrors were given 77 minors and no majors (although Dr. Skabs was ejected for accumulating 16 of those minors) while the Speed Regime had 69 minors and 3 majors. In another rare occurrence, it was the losing team that most often got lead jammer status, with the Speed Regime taking it on 12 of 26 jams while the Night Terrors nabbed it on just 9 of 26. The Night Terrors end their season 6-1, and the Speed Regime ends theirs 5-2.

Charm City Bout Recap: Junkyard Dolls 67, Mobtown Mods 54

In the third-place bout for Charm City’s 2007 season, the Junkyard Dolls had to fight off a determined second-half challenge from the Mobtown Mods to emerge victorious, 67-54. The Mods came into this bout filling out their roster with two guest skaters from Harrisburg Area Roller Derby, Nash Villain and Rainbow’s Revenge, and the bout also featured the skating return of Mods captain Road Rash Rivers, back on skates after giving birth to her second child in September. The Mods were once again missing Holly Go Hardly, though, who had tough luck with injuries all season long.

The Junkyard Dolls kicked off the match with what has become their signature leadoff jammer, Coach Ballbricker, dropping a a 3-0 jam on the Mods’ Duchess of Torque. After a 4-4 tie between the Dolls’ Cherrylicious and the Mods’ Ang Thrax, the Mods’ Lady Quebeaum tied the game up at 8 with a 4-1 jam over Ali Kaida, as Ali went to the box in trying to get around some tough defense from Mods blockers Major Threat and Duchess of Torque. However, the Mods were then once again bedeviled by their recurring first-half woes, going scoreless for the next five jams while the Dolls got lead jammer each time, rolling up 17 unanswered points to establish a 25-8 lead. With only about 4 minutes left in the half, the Dolls were up 31-11 and it looked like they might put the game out of reach by halftime, but the Mods managed to finish the half strong. Two 4-0 jams, one for Rainbow’s Revenge over Killer Kitten and the second for Lady Quebeaum over Mistress May Eye made the score Dolls 31, Mods 19 going into the half.

Coach Ballbricker once again got the job done for the Dolls as the leadoff jammer in the second half, taking advantage of her blockers Shevil Knievel, Dirty Trixie and Radar Love doing a number on Ang Thrax to set up a quick 5-0 grand slam. However, after the Mods’ Duchess of Torque put up 6 points to Cherrylicious’ 2, it was the Dolls’ turn to go cold under a combination of injury and penalty trouble. In the half’s chaotic Jam 4, Killer Kitten was jamming for the Dolls when she took an extremely hard fall but was able to roll off the track to safety, and deciding that she wouldn’t be able to return to the jam, removed her helmet cover and threw it onto the track in an illegal star pass — a pass that resulted in a flurry of penalties as Dolls blockers Scheisty McFeisty, Hurtsula and Ali Kaida all passed around the star before finally getting it to pivot Cherrylicious, who ended up going straight to the box upon placing it on her head. During this time, the Mods’ Nash Villain had run up 8 points, narrowing the gap to Dolls 40, Mods 33. The Mods had a chance to get closer with Cherrylicious starting the next jam in the box and Roxy Toxic at the jammer line unopposed, but the jam ended up being a festival of defense, going the full 2 minutes with neither jammer able to break through the pack even once — highlighted by Doll Shevil Knievel sending Roxy into the audience with a huge hit. But the Mods would get tantalizingly close to a lead on the next jam, where Dolly Rocket, jamming for the Dolls, picked up a fourth minor on a cutting-track penalty, giving Duchess of Torque the opportunity to get a 5-0 that made the score Dolls 40, Mods 38 with about 10 minutes to go in the bout.

Dolly Rocket hadn’t been very happy about going to the penalty box in that jam, though, and took it out on the Mods on the following jam, lapping Nash Villain twice in the course of going 12-4 in a full two-minute jam, giving the Dolls some more breathing room at 52-42. Nash Villain went to the box on that jam, but still managed to claim lead jammer on the next one, pulling 3 points and calling off the jam before the Dolls’ Cherrylicious could add anything for the Dolls. With about six minutes left to play, it was Dolls 52, Mods 45, but the Mods’ fans hopes for a season-ending comeback victory would dissipate on the next two jams. First, in a full two-minute jam, both the Dolls’ Dirty Trixie and the Mods’ Duchess of Torque had some trouble catching up to the pack after a brutal first pass, but Trixie managed to emerge victorious with a 3-0. More importantly, though, Duchess picked up a fourth cutting-track minor at the very end of that jam, leaving the Mods jammerless with a 10 point deficit, 4 minutes left on the clock, and the highest-scoring jammer of the season, Cherrylicious, alone on the jammer start line. Cherrylicious would close the door on the Mods’ chances, getting lead jammer and 8 points before calling off the jam upon Duchess’ return to play, making it 63-45 with only enough time for one more jam. Rainbow’s Revenge picked up a 9-4 win over Ali Kaida to finish out the bout, but that wouldn’t be enough to close the deficit, and the Dolls finished the season 3-4 with their third straight victory over the 0-7 Mods, 67-54.

The Dolls’ Cherrylicious put a capper on a sparkling rookie season by yet again leading her team with 27 points and also sporting the best jammer point differential with a +12; to top it off, she ended the season with 235 points, barely beating out Joy Collision’s 227 for the 2007 scoring title. The Mods’ guest skaters turned out to be their primary point producers, with Nash Villain leading the Mods with 16 points and Rainbow’s Revenge just behind with 15 (oddly enough, both guests ended up with a perfectly even jammer point differential of zero.) 77 minors and 7 majors were assigned to the Mods, while the Dolls picked up 62 minors and 6 majors. The Dolls won the crucial lead jammer battle by taking it on 11 jams, while the Mods got it on 9. In the 23 jams of the bout, there were 3 with no lead jammer.

Charm City Championship Preview: Night Terrors vs. Speed Regime

Charm City’s second home season comes to a close on Sunday evening with what has quickly become a truly storied rivalry in the Baltimore area, as the 2006 champions, the 5-1 Night Terrors, try for a repeat title against the Speed Regime, also 5-1. In 2006, the Terrors were a classic underdog story, opening the season 1-2 and getting drubbed by 41 points against the Speed Regime in their first meeting. In the second half of the season, though, the addition of crushing blocker Mibbs Breakin’ Ribs, the maturing of star jammer Joy Collision, and the entire team’s effort to build an impressively cohesive defense paid off in the most dramatic of fashions, as the Terrors managed to stick with the Regime in their rematch and erase a 6 point deficit on the last jam of the championship bout, winning 57-55 and handing the Speed Regime their first loss ever.

The Regime and Terrors next faced each other in June of 2007, and that hotly contested rematch also came down to the last lap of the last jam, but this time with the Regime on top, 63-60, as a last-second block from Regime’s Stormin’ Mormon took down Terrors jammer Dr. Skabs before she could score the last few points the Terrors needed to win. But in the 4th meeting between the teams, the Night Terrors owned the Regime much like the Regime had owned them in their first meeting, thumping them 96-49. Over the course of four meetings, only 5 points separate the two teams.

A major factor in this bout will be whether the Speed Regime can compensate for the mid-season loss of two critical blockers in Berzerker and Buzz Kill — porous defense was a serious problem for them the last time they faced the Terrors. On the other hand, the Terrors are looking at some injury trouble: Mibbs Breakin’ Ribs may not be at 100 percent, skating on a bruised knee, fellow blocker Minerva Vavoom is nursing a shoulder injury, and the Mexican Fury is questionable for the roster with a broken finger.

Charm City Bout Preview: Junkyard Dolls vs. Mobtown Mods

In the third-place game of Charm City’s championship doubleheader, the 0-6 Mobtown Mods would very much like to end a rough season on an up note by getting revenge on the 2-4 Junkyard Dolls, who have already beaten them twice this year. The Mods do have a number of things working in their favor, as team captain Road Rash Rivers, who sat out the whole season during a pregnancy, returns to the hardwood to help out her team. Additionally, the Mods’ 2006 workhorse, Lady Quebeaum, returned from an ankle injury in August and has been looking more impressive with every outing. Finally, the Mods are bringing in two nimble guest skaters from nearby Harrisburg Area Roller Derby, Rainbow’s Revenge and Nash Villain, who provide a little more depth at the jammer position but are also smart and effective blockers.

The Dolls have a number of weapons of their own, though: they have 2007’s current scoring leader in rookie Cherrylicious (208 points in 6 bouts), and halfway through the season they picked up a major force in Dolly Rocket, who has helped to significantly improve the Dolls’ play at the front of the pack. Rookies Killer Kitten and Radar Love have shown dramatic improvement over the course of the season, and Dirty Trixie, previously exclusively a blocker, has been taking more turns at the jammer line, making the Dolls one of the more adaptable teams in the league.

The deciding factor in this game may be whether the Mods can keep the first half close — throughout the season, they’ve generally kept the score even in the second half but opened the bout very ragged. Key for the Dolls will be continuing their improvement at pack cohesion — they’ve always been a very hard-hitting group individually but they’ve been adding a dimension of defensive teamwork that has made life a lot harder on opposing jammers.

Men’s bout preview: New York Shock Exchange @ Harm City Homicide

The halftime of Charm City’s championship bout this Sunday sees the return of a Charm City championship tradition in a men’s derby exhibition. Last year the Charm City refs, playing co-ed, squeaked past the Pioneer Valley Dirty Dozen in a 15 minute expo, but this time it’s a full 20 minutes of the visiting New York Shock Exchange vs. the Harm City Homicide (your humble journalist’s team) in their home debut. Although the Shock Exchange often plays halftime exhibitions against themselves in the NY/NJ area, both teams have just one 40 minute bout under their belts: the Shock Exchange defeated Pioneer Valley 107-50 in April (although PVRD skated 7 players against 14 for NYSE) and the Homicide lost to Pioneer Valley 100-67 in September.

This bout has the distinction of featuring more referees playing in the game than will be officiating the match (eight: Homicide’s Justice Feelgood Marshall and Virginia Slim (Charm City), Shock Exchange’s Psycho Billy and Jefferee (Long Island) and Endless Justin, Hambone, Flying Squirrel and Mr. Rawk (Gotham)). The Gotham refs will all be skating under alter-alter egos: Endless Justin as Gordon Gekko, Hambone as Snausage, Flying Squirrel as Jonathan R and Mr. Rawk as Junk Bond. Doubtless the effect of having so many refs in the game will be that neither team will commit any penalties.

Bout recap: Charm City Intraleague: Night Terrors 96, Speed Regime 49

In a surprising game, the Night Terrors handed an uncharacteristically flat Speed Regime team their first defeat of the season and their biggest defeat to date, building a massive 51 point lead in the first half and coasting to a 96-49 victory in the end. Speed Regime’s look had changed a little bit since their June meeting with the Night Terrors, with hard hitters Buzz Kill and Berzerker no longer on the season roster. The Night Terrors were still missing Minerva Vavoom with a rotator cuff injury, and had also lost rookie Blind Banshee for the season to a broken ankle suffered at practice, but did have breakout rookie Marzipain skating after having missed the June bout.

At first, it looked like it was likely to be a traditionally narrow matchup for the two rivals, with the Terrors’ Joy Collision kicking off the bout with a 4-2 over Flo Shizzle, Pixie Rocket and Pistol Whip battling to a 4-4 draw on the second jam, and Flo Shizzle managing to squeak out a 2-1 win over Rosie the Rioter (abetted a bit by Rosie, believing she was lead jammer, losing some time trying to call off the jam from the ground.) That brought the score to Night Terrors 9, Speed Regime 8, but the Terrors stepped on the gas on the next series of jams. Marzipain ran up an 8-0 jam on Stormin’ Mormon, who first found herself on the wrong end of a thunderous block from Mibbs Breakin’ Ribs and then found herself trapped behind a tenacious double team from Joy Collision and Rolling Blackout. Next up, the Terrors’ Dr. Skabs managed to outrace the speedy Psycho78 to notch a quick 4-0 score, and Joy Collision managed to pick up a 9-2 on Regime captain Pistol Whip when Pistol went to the box during her first scoring pass. Rosie the Rioter followed that by dropping a 7-4 jam on Pistol, and suddenly, the Terrors were up 37-14 — already the biggest deficit the Speed Regime had ever faced in two seasons. While the Regime tried to strike back with a 5-0 jam for Psycho78 over Marzipain, the last five jams of the period were a nightmare for the war machine. The Regime defense was consistently unable to keep the Terrors jammers from grabbing lead jammer status, and double-digits jams for Dr. Skabs and Joy Collision helped to widen an already substantial gap. The Night Terrors ended the half on a 35-2 run and had taken lead on 10 out of 13 jams throughout the half, leaving the scoreboard showing a startling 72-21 advantage for the presumptive underdogs.

The second half was better for the Regime, with their defense no longer allowing the double-digit jam scores that had killed them in the first half, but their offense still couldn’t get anything significant going until very late in the half. The first two jams went to the Regime by small margins, with Regime blockers Pistol Whip and Deathany joining forces to stymie Terrors jammer Rosie the Rioter and letting Regime jammer Psycho78 put up a 3-0. Flo Shizzle followed that with a 4-2 over Pixie Rocket, but then the momentum swung back to the Terrors. In the following 7 jams, Speed Regime only got on the scoreboard once, with Psycho78 managed to put up 4 points to 6 for Pixie Rocket in an intense two-minute jam that left all participants gasping for air. At the end of that 7 jam series, the Terrors had been on another tear — 18 to 4 — that left the score at 96 to 32 with about seven minutes left to play. Perhaps not wanting to let their rivals hit the century mark, the Speed Regime finally seemed to start clicking at this point, not allowing another point for the Terrors and managing to put up 17 unanswered points going into the final jam of the night. But that jam, in a way, seemed to be a microcosm of the whole bout — although Joy Collision, jamming for the Terrors, was sent to the box just as her opponent Flo Shizzle was declared lead jammer, the Night Terrors defense bottled up Flo for so long that she chose to call off the jam at 0-0 rather than let Joy get back on the floor. The final score was Night Terrors 96, Speed Regime 49.

Joy Collision yet again led all scoring with 42 points on 9 jams, running up a jammer point differential of +38 and getting lead of 7 of her 9 jams for a very impressive lead jammer percentage of 77. Psycho78 led her team’s scoring for the second bout in a row, picking up 16 points on 7 jams. The Night Terrors were slightly more penalized than the Regime, with the Terrors picking up 50 minors and 5 majors while the Regime was assigned 42 minors and 4 majors. The lead jammer battle was crucially lopsided in favor of the Night Terrors, who picked it up on 14 jams against 9 for the Regime. In 26 jams, there were just 3 with no lead jammer. Marzipain was chosen as her team’s MVP after the bout, while the Speed Regime gave the honor to Deathany.

Bout recap: Charm City Intraleague: Junkyard Dolls 97, Mobtown Mods 46

In the second half of Charm City’s September doubleheader, the Junkyard Dolls picked up their second win of the season with their second win over the still winless Mobtown Mods, 97-46. While the Mods played a better first half than usual, they were finished off by depth problems in the second half, with the Junkyard Dolls able to field 10 different jammers throughout the bout and the Mods relying primarily on their star Duchess of Torque at the second line. The Mods came into the bout missing their field general, with captain / bench coach Road Rash Rivers unable to make the game, having given birth to her second child just six days earlier. However, the Mods also had a long-awaited debut from Holly Go Hardly, skating in her first CCRG bout after a number of unrelated injuries keeping her on the bench for nearly the entire season. Additionally, 2006 star Lady Quebeaum, quickly recovering from a broken leg suffered in March, was feeling solid enough to jam for the first time in 2007. On the opposing bench, Dolls captain Sizzle-Leen was still out, suffering from her own broken ankle.

The Dolls opened up the bout with a surprising platoon, sending out blocker Coach Ballbricker to jam against the Mods’ Duchess of Torque, and it worked out for the Dolls, with Dolls defenders Cherrylicious, Dolly Rocket and Shevil Knievel shutting down Torque long enough for Ballbricker to get through, claim lead, and get a grand slam point in the course of going 9-3 over Torque. After a tough scoreless jam between Killer Kitten and Roxy Toxic in which both jammers were sent sprawling during their opening pass, the Dolls’ leading scorer, Cherrylicious, put a damper on Lady Quebeaum’s first jam of the season, beating her out 8-4 and giving the Dolls a 17-7 advantage. For the majority of the remainder of the period, the teams traded small-margin wins, but on Jam 9 the Dolls got a big win when Shevil Knievel and Dolly Rocket worked together to force Mods jammer Duchess of Torque into committing her fourth minor. That left the floor open for Dolls jammer Killer Kitten to run up a 9-0 jam and give the Junkyard Dolls a 36-17 lead. On the second to last jam of the half, the Dolls defense stepped up strong with their jammer Scheisty McFeisty in the box, with Shevil Knievel, Hurtsula and Radar Love all separately taking out Roxy and keeping her on her opening lap for the full minute of Scheisty’s penalty in a jam that eventually ended 0-0. With Killer Kitten putting up a 3-0 jam over the ubiquitous Duchess of Torque on the half’s final jam, the Dolls were enjoying a 39-21 lead at the half.

The Mods opened up the second half with two jams that looked like they were about to get the red and black back into the bout. Duchess of Torque lapped Schiesty McFeisty to pick up a quick 5-0 (with some help from Lady Quebeaum twice sending Schiesty to the floor), and Roxy Toxic raced through to put down a 4-0 on Radar Love. That brought the Mods to within just 9 points at 39-30, but the Dolls were very quick to roll back the comeback and then some. Cherrylicious was able to run up a 10-0 jam over Lady Quebeaum on the subsequent jam, and after a razor-thin 4-3 victory for the Mods’ Duchess of Torque over Dirty Trixie, the Dolls’ newest weapon Dolly Rocket dropped another Dolls 10-0, this one on Ang Thrax, that put the score at Junkyard Dolls 62, Mobtown Mods 34 with about 12 minutes to go. While the Mods continued to battle — especially Duchess of Torque, who ended going to the jammer line in an amazing 12 out of 23 jams — that jam seemed to be the turning point for the Dolls, who continued to extend the lead on almost every remaining jam of the bout. On the bout’s last jam, it was all Cherrylicious, who put up the night’s most lopsided score by lapping Roxy Toxic three times on a 15-3 jam that put the final score at Junkyard Dolls 97, Mobtown Mods 46.

Cherrylicious impressively managed to lead all scoring even though she only jammed 3 times, picking up 33 points for an average-points-per-jam score of 11. She also outscored her opposing jammers by 26 points. Her teammate Killer Kitten was most effective at getting lead jammer status, getting it on 4 of 6 tries for 66%. Mods MVP Duchess of Torque led her Mods with 29 points on 12 jams, and jammed more times than all other Mods jammers combined. Dolly Rocket was named the MVP for the Dolls for an exemplary bout at both the pivot and jammer positions. The Dolls picked up 66 minors and 1 major, while the Mods were given 49 minors and 2 majors. The Dolls took lead jammer on 13 jams against 7 for the Mods; in 23 jams, there were 4 with no lead jammer.
