Bout Preview: (19) Rocky Mountain @ (9) Madison
Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on October 19, 2007
The big WFTDA matchup of this weekend finds the #19th ranked Rocky Mountain Roller Girls traveling to Wisconsin to get on the rink with Madison’s Mad Rollin’ Dolls, who are looking to climb back up the rankings after their early exit from Eastern Regionals dropped them from #4 to #9.
The Rocky Mountain girls have been pretty active this summer, starting with June wins against unranked Angel City and #20 Atlanta (176-119 and 91-70 respectively.) #15 Rose City knocked them off in July by a score of 111-74, but Rocky Mountain has been on a roll since then, beating Division III Fort Wayne 164-69 in August and thumping unranked No Coast 108-20 in September (and shutting them out for the entire first period!) Finally, in a special interleague battle of local teams, the RMRG Sugar Kill Gang defeated the Danger Dolls of Pikes Peak Derby Dames, 120-78.
On the flip side, Madison hasn’t seen too much interleague action this year in comparison. In June, they notched a big win by defeating the Hot Rod Honeys, one of Texas’ four home teams, 101-92. The next two months, though, saw tough times for the Mad Rollin’ Dolls — first, they lost to Tucson at home by a convincing 120-64, and then were shocked by Windy City at August’s Heartland Havoc, 94-63.
Madison will be hosting 2008’s Eastern Regional tournament next October, so it’s a pretty safe bet they’re interested in reclaiming their former title as the team to beat in the East … and will try to start on that road with a win over Rocky Mountain.
UPDATE: Rocky Mountain scores a considerable upset, sending Madison to their third loss in a row, 131-98. Gnosis from Leadjammer mentions in comments that Madison team captain Crackerjack didn’t play in this one and the Dairyland Dolls were fielding a new lineup, which may have had an effect, but still an impressive accomplishment for Rocky Mountain. Madison’s Geoffrey Saucer has a mini-recap over here on RollerDerbyIsSport.
